To translate a PADS Layout design to Expedition PCB using the "PADS Layout/Expedition Design and Library Translator"... Installing the translator: - Download the latest translator, unzip to a new folder, and run Setup.exe.
- On the Mentor Graphic Install dialog, select Install Product.
- Once past the License Agreement, verify that the Select a source location path is the same folder to which the downloaded file was unzipped to.
- On the Product Selection dialog, toggle on the Pads to Expedition Translator product and click Next. Click Install.
- When the installation is complete, optionally Verify Installation.
- Exit the Mentor Graphics Install program.
Translating the Pads file: - Start>All Programs>Mentor Graphics SDD>Translators>ADS Layout to Expedition Design and Library Translator.
- On the Translator startup dialog, select PADS Layout Designs and Libraries from the pulldown list and click OK.
- On the Designs tab, specify a path to Place translated files in, preferably the future location of the new Expedition PCB layout.
- Click the Add button to locate/specify the original PADS Layout design(s) to be translated. Check Help to read about the available options on this dialog.
- Click the Translate button.
- Review the translation log and click Close. Close all the previous Translator dialogs.
Importing into a new Expedition PCB job: - Start>All Programs>Mentor Graphics SDD>{Design Capture DesignView or DxDesigner}-Expedition Flow>Layout>Expedition PCB.
- In Expedition PCB, select File>New from the menus.
- On the Job Management Wizard "Create" dialog, click the Browse button and point to the new "project" folder. Type in a name for the project, including the extension (i.e. 1234.prj), and click Open.
- On the Job Management Wizard dialog, click the Edit Project button. Click Yes at the "Create the file?" prompt.
- On the Project Editor dialog, click the Browse button to locate/attach a Central Library (.lmc). The library must contains Layout Templates ("seed" layouts for Expedition PCB). Click OK.
- On the Job Management Wizard dialog, click Next.
- Edit the New PCB file name if necessary.
- Select a PCB layout template from the pulldown list. "4 layer template" and "8 layer template" are the basic delivered templates.
Note: Layer stackup, Board Outline, Route Border, etc. and the local library will be overwritten when importing the translated Pads data. - Click Next. Ignore the CDB warning message. Click Finish. Click Close.
- In Expedition PCB, select File>Open and browse to and open the new Expedition .pcb file (in version EXP2005, the .pcb file is opened automatically). Ignore the Back Annotation message as there is no schematic/C.DB.
- File>Import>ASCII.
- On the Import ASCII dialog, browse to the folder containing the previously translated *.hkp files. Click OK.
- After the import process is complete, use the File Viewer to view any log that the prompts suggest.
- Setup>roject Integration. At the top of the Project Integration dialog, click the Edit the Project File button.
- On the Project Editor dialog Netlist tab, specify a Netlist Type Keyin Netlist. Browse to Location of the original translated files and Open Netlist.kyn. Click OK to save and exit.
- On the Project Integration dialog, click the Forward Annotate button. Check the log file.
- Close the Project Integration dialog.
- File>Save.
